Amherst Hurricane Boosters

The Community Recess Van Begins on January 11, 2021!

The Boosters are going to "Meet the Moment" with Amherst Recreation

During this tough time, with many negative events occurring worldwide, nationally, and locally, the Boosters wants to contribute to community building, optimism, and to the well-being of our community's youth. We are continuing to support our athletic teams, as usual, but this year, we received a "Meet the Moment" grant from VELA Educational funds awarded to the Boosters by Homeschool Legal Defense Association ("HSLDA").

Physical activities, and in-person socialization has been particularly difficult for younger children. Many of the community's children have switched from public education to homeschooling, and/or remote only education. Therefore, we decided that this "Meet the Moment" grant would provide two activities, one in-person, and one virtual. Additionally, as we discussed these activities, we thought that teaming up with Amherst Recreation would be able to maximize the impact of this grant. We were pleased that Amherst Recreation agreed to collaborate on these two activities for the community's children.

The first activity, the Recess Van, begins at Amherst Regional Middle School (170 Chestnut St.) on Monday, 1/11/21, 11:30-12:15 pm. The Recess Van is geared toward grades K-6 (ages 6-12), and will have recess type activities led by staff and volunteers. This is a voluntary, free activity. There is not transportation provided, rather the van is going to travel to five different sites for three consecutive weeks, weather permitting. This van can be analogized to a "ding-dong" cart of activities rather than ice cream. It is expected that children who attend will be in good health and wear masks. We hope this gives Amherst area children a good break from screen time, and a positive boost to these students' day!

The second activity will be YouTube workouts led by the dynamic, Cedric Gonnet, who has been an educator, coach, and motivational speaker. We expect that his programming will be geared towards grades 4-8. We will post that information as soon as we have the specific details. This program will entail signing up on the Amherst Recreational website, and the fee for the program will be offset by the grant, so there will be a small fee for this program.
