      The Canes' T.U.R.F. Project

      The Canes' T.U.R.F. Project

      The Canes' T.U.R.F. Project

The Canes’ T.U.R.F. (“Transformative Uses for Regional Fields”) Project is necessary.  There’s a dire need to replace the 23-year-old track and field that currently have the student-athletes at a disadvantage.  The T.U.R.F. Projectwill create a usable track and playable fields offering the best pedagogical experience and community gathering place. The T.U.R.F. Project will allow for more hours of use, lower maintenance costs, and less use of water and pesticides.

The new track and field will be relocated and reoriented for optimal use including a regulation size synthetic field that is comparable to other communities in New England.  The T.U.R.F. Project will allow the regional student-athletes, physical education programs, recreational programs, and community members to gain long-term wellness from safe outdoor facilities. This project will be ADA and Title IX compliant. Additionally, it will allow for revenue generating opportunities such as hosting regional and state competitions, competitive league rentals, and other community events.

      Why Now?

      The Canes' T.U.R.F. Project

      The Canes' T.U.R.F. Project

      • Our current track has been condemned by MIAA.
      • We cannot host meets, and athletes cannot practice on the track.
      • The current grass field is not regulation size
      • The entire track & field are oriented East-West; so runners and goalies stare into the sun
      • The Fields are overused by 1.5 times their capacity.  Fields can't rest so their condition becomes unplayable.
      • Many teams, coaches, and referees refuse to play on our fields.

      What is the Goal?

      Immediate Benefits

      Immediate Benefits

      • Reorient the entire facility to North-South
      • Build an 8-lane track
      • Install a synthetic, multi-sport field
      • Light the whole facilities
      • Create permanent stands

The Boosters have done research.  There are eco-friendly, player-friendly synthetic turf field options You can learn more through this presentation.

      Immediate Benefits

      Immediate Benefits

      Immediate Benefits

      • Hosting local, regional and state competitions
      • Almost year-round facility to practice and play games (no more soccer and lax practice in the gym)
      • Attract and retain families (keep our students from moving to other towns or going to private schools)
      • Provide an equitable playing field where students can hone college-level skills on synthetic turf or practice on a college-level track -- creating opportunity for college scholarships
      • Provide ADA compliant access for students and the community
      • Generate revenue for the school (charge visitors admissions and rent to local competitive clubs) and town (visitors spending time and money in our local businesses)
